Should You Get Flu Shots Each Year?
May 21st, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAre there any flu shots side effects?
Each year I have neglected to get flu shots, but I have always gotten one for my young daughter. I don’t know why I don’t get one for myself, but I guess it is because I am often the only one within my group of friends that does not catch everything that comes along. I guess it means that I have a good immune system, in general, and I don’t get sick very easily. However, I do realize that these shots to prevent the flu are important for many, even if I don’t think I need one.
Luckily, I have not had the flu in a long time and my decision to not get flu shots did not hurt me. However, some have to have them, and those people may be in your home. When it comes to the elderly and children under 12, it is always a great idea to get this shot each year. They are the ones that are most prone to getting each and every thing that comes their way, and the flu shots can help them avoid some of this. They have an underdeveloped immune system, or one that has weakened over the years. They can’t fight off things like adults under the age of 50 or 60 may be able to do.
There are a few problems with the flu shots, but you should not allow these things to stop you from getting one for yourself or those in your family. The flu shot you get is based on the flu that went around the year before. They cannot make a shot for a variation that has yet to come about. What that means is that if the old one is still going around, which it normally is, you will be protected. However, it may not do so well against a flu that has mutated substantially. You may still get the flu if you come into contact with a new strain.
Look around each fall for information on flu shots in your area. You child’s pediatrician may have them in stock, and you may even get a notice that your child can come in to get one. There are also some free clinics that offer them to children, the elderly, and adults that are at a high risk of getting the flu. There are times when doses of the flu shots run in short supply, but they do try to keep up with the demand based on what they used the year before. If the supply runs out, don’t give up, and new supply may be on the way very soon.
Juvenile Boot Camps
February 29th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAcross the world for decades, parents have threatened their unruly children with the notion of sending them to military school if they don’t shape up. Nine out of ten times, those unruly kids or teens never go to military school. They either straighten out on their own time or they continue to be menaces to society. In today’s society, sending your child to military school isn’t always the first option anymore. There are lots of places that can be referred to as juvenile boot camps that are meant to reform your teen and send them back to you as a changed person. If you believe that is possible, then looking into juvenile boot camps may be a great choice for your family.
There has been a ton of controversy in recent years about the effectiveness of juvenile boot camps. Depending on who you talk to, they are either very effective or a complete waste of time and money. Since the cost of some of these boot camps are averaging $15,000-20,000 for attendance, people should be completely sure of the need to send their child before investing that large amount of money into fixing a problem that may not be fixed at all. A lot of parents enlist their teenager under the assumption that juvenile boot camps will be a reality check and a quick fix. Unfortunately, it isn’t very common for a short stay at a boot camp to be a quick fix. Perhaps for younger teens who are in the early stages of rebellion and acting out could be candidates for a quick fix short stay in a boot camp. However, once the teens are more set in their destructive behaviors and appear to have no structure for themselves, a short term camp isn’t going to help them in the least. Those teens should be attending a long term juvenile boot camp.
Some of the controversy that has come to light in regards to these juvenile boot camps is the safety of your unruly teens. Instructors have gotten a lot of negativity when they push the teen a bit too far either mentally or physically. It is one thing to willingly enlist in military school or boot camp and expect the rigorous exercises and screaming in your face mentality. It is another thing to take a teen who is struggling through their life and may have underlying issues and push them entirely too far. If you’re a parent who is considering enrolling your teen in a juvenile boot camp, make sure that you do your homework. Don’t be too quick to write the check and pack your child’s suitcase for them. Find out what the boot camp’s policies are. Find out how many complaints have been filed, if any. See if you can arrange a trip to spend a few hours observing and visiting with some of the staff members. Your child may be out of control and in major need of some major changes, but you owe it to your child and yourself to ensure that the program will be effective and keep your child safe as well.

February 19th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedMost of us have heard of a lucky rabbit’s foot. Those furry creations meant to bring us luck and fortune. Although not made from the actual foot of any bunny, they are cute and can give someone a boost they wouldn’t otherwise have. Another item that can help a person to feel better is Greek worry beads. These brightly colored strings of beads are popular in Greece and now they’re being recognized and embraced all over the world.
People who have had the luxury of traveling to this beautiful country have likely already seen a set of these. Greek worry beads are often seen strung up in the homes of those who live in Greece. They are a symbol of tranquility and the beads are said to help relieve worry. It’s not unusual to find several sets of beads hung up throughout a home.
It’s also not uncommon to see people in Greece carrying the beads with them. They may keep a set in the car. You’ll likely see some hanging from the rear view mirrors in vehicles there, and some people even keep a set in their pocket or purse. A great place to see many sets of worry beads is at the airport in Athens. Anxious flyers often hold tight to their beads during flights. It helps to relax them.
In addition to help ward off stress, many people turn to them for even more support. They are said to have helpful qualities when it comes to stopping smoking and even losing weight. Rubbing the worry beads is suggested whenever a person feels stressed or overwhelmed. When you are trying to break an addiction to nicotine or food, rubbing them can really be an important aid. This is one of the reasons so many people offer the beads as a gift to others.
Finding them outside the Greek Islands isn’t difficult at all. Many countries are now catching on to the worry bead craze. You can find them all over the world. If you are looking for authentic Greek worry beads though, ensure that’s where they were originally made. They will usually be called Komboloi worry beads. This suggests that they were indeed crafted in Greece.
If you know someone who struggles with worry and stress, buy a set for them as well. Although they may be just a tad bit skeptical of the power of Greek worry beads, once they hold them, they’ll understand their charm. They do indeed offer comfort and by rubbing your finger or thumb over them, you’ll feel the stress just melt away. In our stress-filled world, almost everyone can benefit from having a set of these unique beads.

Anne Frank - A Heartbreaking Story Of A Young Woman
February 17th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedMany heartbreaking stories have come from World War II but none more inspiring than the story of Anne Frank. She had begun to keep a journal, shortly before going into hiding with her family in Amsterdam. As Jews, they had been forced to take this measure to escape Nazi persecution. The family, which comprised of Anne, her father Otto, mother Edith and sister Margot, hid in an annexe above the offices of her father’s business. The building would later become a tourist landmark, receiving thousands of visitors every year.
After hiding for two years, the family were betrayed and Anne and Margot were sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where Anne died from typhus in 1945. Margot had died a short time before and Otto would be the only family member to survive. A number of friends had helped the family, bringing them food and essential items to their hiding place. One of their staunchest friends was a woman called Miep Gies. On Otto’s return home, she presented him with Anne’s diary. She had found it and managed to save it from the soldiers. When the diary was published, the Anne Frank story spread across the world.
The diary, which has entries from June 1942 - August 1944, tells of the daily lives of Anne, her family and the friends who also went into hiding with them. It has been translated into many languages and adapted in the form of movies and a stage play, which have also helped Anne Frank to become a household name.
The play was called The Diary of a Young Girl and opened on Broadway in 1955, starring Susan Strasberg as Anne Frank. The play won a Tony Award and Strasberg received a nomination for Best Actress. The story was told again in the 1959 movie, The Diary of Anne Frank with Millie Perkins as Anne and Shelley Winters in support. A made for TV film was broadcast with Ben Kingsley in the role of Otto.
The diary, which has sold over 25 million copies, shows a remarkable writing talent and readers are moved by the young girl’s courage and sense of humor. She describes the claustrophobic conditions in the annexe and the frustration of being cut off from normal life. The family had been joined by the Van Pels family and Anne Frank formed a friendship with the son, Peter. They were becoming romantically involved when everyone was arrested. The Van Pels and another friend in hiding, a dentist called Fritz Pfeffer, also perished in concentration camps.
Asbestos Removal Is A Serious Business
January 22nd, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedUntil recently, I didn’t really realize that asbestos removal was serious business. Like everyone, I heard about the threats from asbestos when the World Trade Center was attacked, but I had figured that that was only because of the destruction of the building. It seemed likely that most people had already had asbestos removed or contained, and I didn’t realize that it was a real problem.
I was in for some surprising and unpleasant results when I started to renovate my home. To my surprise, there was asbestos all over the place! Some of it wasn’t really much of a problem. When I hired someone for asbestos siding removal, he gave me an extremely reasonable estimate. You see, asbestos removal is easier when the asbestos is well contained. It can be used in a wide variety of different applications, and in some of its forms it is relatively safe. In the case of asbestos siding, it can be removed in pieces without any of it getting into the air. This means that it is not very harmful to the home owners, and not very dangerous to the asbestos removers.
Still, the asbestos siding was definitely a wake-up call. After that, I wanted to sign up for some asbestos testing before I did any more home renovation. To my surprise, I needed more asbestos removal. You see, my attic had asbestos insulation. Unlike siding, the installation was not well contained. It was wrapped around pipes, stuffed into corners and crevices, and generally spread around. This type of asbestos removal was more important, but was also more difficult. You see, if you have asbestos hanging out in your attic, it is only a matter of time before it gets into your house. To this day, I don’t know how much I was exposed to. I hope it was very little, and so far my health is good, but who knows what the future holds.
The mistake that I made was assuming that, because I had never heard anything about asbestos being in my house, there was none there. In reality, the fact that I did not know meant that I was at risk. If you have a house built more than a couple decades ago, you should have it tested for asbestos, lead paint, and various other toxins that used to be used in home construction. After all, if you have a toxic home, it is best to know before it is too late.
