I Love The 80s Arcade Games

May 25th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Do you not agree that 80s arcade games are classics in every sense of the word.  As the first popular and widespread arcade games, they set the stage for an industry that has since overcome the movie business in terms of dollar figures.  My favorite 80s arcade game was always the Space Invaders.  Simple and yet for some reason totally addictive, Space Invaders pretty much sums up the 80s arcade game experience.

Just about every 80s arcade game is now available in one form or other to be played on your computer.   While its not the same thing as the actual arcade experience, it’ll probably satisfy your 80s arcade game cravings and save you a whole bunch of quarters to boot.

With the proper modifications, you can set up certain gaming consoles to play 80s arcade games as well.  I had a friend who help me to rewire my Xbox, and I’m not really sure how he did it but now I’ve got just about every 80s arcade game I’d ever want on its hard drive.  Apparently, a lot of people will use community forums to post files for free games download, random things including 80s arcade games, and my friend just knew where to look to grab them.  I’m not sure that its entirely legal, but hey, I don’t think anyone is going to be busting down my door over some 80s arcade games.  (But I have since stopped doing this as this is still not right).

Of course, 80s arcade games are still sold legally in packages designed for either consoles or computers.  Atari came out with a compilation of their greatest 80s arcade games a few years ago and I still see it in stores.  I have to hand it to them, only videogame makers would ever be able to pull off making a profit on software that is over 20 years old.  The file sizes for most 80s arcade games aren’t much bigger than one page word documents, and with a just a basic programming know how you could probably rewrite any 80s arcade game yourself with a graphing calculator.

Having said that, there is a nostalgia factor about 80s arcade games that makes it almost worth it to drop money on them all over again.  Maybe I’m just a complete hopeless 80s arcade game addict, but I’m sure I’m not the only one.  Either way, I’m sure I’m going to be playing Space Invaders and other games like it at least now and then for the rest of my life.  If I ever have kids and if they ever put me in a nursing home, I won’t mind so long as there are some cute nurses and some 80s arcade games to play with.  I just love the 80s arcade games.

Where To Hire Cheap Movers

December 7th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Where can one hire cheap movers to help with the moving.  Moving is always pretty difficult, but when you try to do it cheaply it can become even more complex. Finding cheap movers that you can trust is not east. On the one hand, you don’t want to pay a lot, but on the other hand you don’t want to go with someone who doesn’t have the skills or the dependability. There are so many questions that you need to ask. Should you buy cheap moving boxes and try to pack things yourself, or should you go for a deluxe mover service which organizes your things for you? Do you need everything there right away, or can you wait on some things? Most of all, how far are you going to move? Answers to these questions determine what your best options are.

Of course, if you really want to save money (which is hard to come by nowadays), you should probably just rent a you-Haul or other cheap moving truck. The prices are very reasonable, and you can do all the moving yourself. It will be less expensive than cheap movers, perhaps by quite a bit. The problem is, of course, that you have to drive a U-Haul around. You need a friend to work with you, you need hours and hours to pack and unpack everything, and you need nerves of steel or some experience. Driving a moving truck when you have no experience with trucks, after all, is no easy matter at all.

If you want to pay a little bit more, there are cheap moving companies that will carry all your stuff across the country on palettes. This is great for those who need long distance moving. The best way to do it is to take your essentials along with you, then send the rest along to get there later. It might take a week or two, but it will arrive safe and sound. The problem with these kinds of cheap movers is that they tend to not help you carry your stuff into your house and place it there so you can unpack. Basically, they pick it up for you, drop it off at your new front door, and then you are on your own. You need someone to help you take everything in, and when you’re done you will have a lot of leftover palettes.

If you live in a college town, it can be pretty easy to find good cheap movers. I used to always hire students to move my stuff. When I would do this, however, I would try to be cautious. I removed my valuables and fragile stuff on my own, after all I wasn’t dealing with professional movers. Still, it did save me quite a bit of money this way.

Should You Get Flu Shots Each Year?

May 21st, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Are there any flu shots side effects?

Each year I have neglected to get flu shots, but I have always gotten one for my young daughter. I don’t know why I don’t get one for myself, but I guess it is because I am often the only one within my group of friends that does not catch everything that comes along. I guess it means that I have a good immune system, in general, and I don’t get sick very easily. However, I do realize that these shots to prevent the flu are important for many, even if I don’t think I need one.

Luckily, I have not had the flu in a long time and my decision to not get flu shots did not hurt me. However, some have to have them, and those people may be in your home. When it comes to the elderly and children under 12, it is always a great idea to get this shot each year. They are the ones that are most prone to getting each and every thing that comes their way, and the flu shots can help them avoid some of this. They have an underdeveloped immune system, or one that has weakened over the years. They can’t fight off things like adults under the age of 50 or 60 may be able to do.

There are a few problems with the flu shots, but you should not allow these things to stop you from getting one for yourself or those in your family. The flu shot you get is based on the flu that went around the year before. They cannot make a shot for a variation that has yet to come about. What that means is that if the old one is still going around, which it normally is, you will be protected. However, it may not do so well against a flu that has mutated substantially. You may still get the flu if you come into contact with a new strain.

Look around each fall for information on flu shots in your area. You child’s pediatrician may have them in stock, and you may even get a notice that your child can come in to get one. There are also some free clinics that offer them to children, the elderly, and adults that are at a high risk of getting the flu. There are times when doses of the flu shots run in short supply, but they do try to keep up with the demand based on what they used the year before. If the supply runs out, don’t give up, and new supply may be on the way very soon.

Juvenile Boot Camps

February 29th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Across the world for decades, parents have threatened their unruly children with the notion of sending them to military school if they don’t shape up. Nine out of ten times, those unruly kids or teens never go to military school. They either straighten out on their own time or they continue to be menaces to society. In today’s society, sending your child to military school isn’t always the first option anymore. There are lots of places that can be referred to as juvenile boot camps that are meant to reform your teen and send them back to you as a changed person. If you believe that is possible, then looking into juvenile boot camps may be a great choice for your family.

There has been a ton of controversy in recent years about the effectiveness of juvenile boot camps. Depending on who you talk to, they are either very effective or a complete waste of time and money. Since the cost of some of these boot camps are averaging $15,000-20,000 for attendance, people should be completely sure of the need to send their child before investing that large amount of money into fixing a problem that may not be fixed at all. A lot of parents enlist their teenager under the assumption that juvenile boot camps will be a reality check and a quick fix. Unfortunately, it isn’t very common for a short stay at a boot camp to be a quick fix. Perhaps for younger teens who are in the early stages of rebellion and acting out could be candidates for a quick fix short stay in a boot camp. However, once the teens are more set in their destructive behaviors and appear to have no structure for themselves, a short term camp isn’t going to help them in the least. Those teens should be attending a long term juvenile boot camp.

Some of the controversy that has come to light in regards to these juvenile boot camps is the safety of your unruly teens. Instructors have gotten a lot of negativity when they push the teen a bit too far either mentally or physically. It is one thing to willingly enlist in military school or boot camp and expect the rigorous exercises and screaming in your face mentality. It is another thing to take a teen who is struggling through their life and may have underlying issues and push them entirely too far. If you’re a parent who is considering enrolling your teen in a juvenile boot camp, make sure that you do your homework. Don’t be too quick to write the check and pack your child’s suitcase for them. Find out what the boot camp’s policies are. Find out how many complaints have been filed, if any. See if you can arrange a trip to spend a few hours observing and visiting with some of the staff members. Your child may be out of control and in major need of some major changes, but you owe it to your child and yourself to ensure that the program will be effective and keep your child safe as well.

Greek Worry Beads Take Your Stress Away

February 19th, 2008    Subscribe To Our Feed

Most of us have heard of a lucky rabbit’s foot. Those furry creations meant to bring us luck and fortune. Although not made from the actual foot of any bunny, they are cute and can give someone a boost they wouldn’t otherwise have. Another item that can help a person to feel better is Greek worry beads. These brightly colored strings of beads are popular in Greece and now they’re being recognized and embraced all over the world.

People who have had the luxury of traveling to this beautiful country have likely already seen a set of these. Greek worry beads are often seen strung up in the homes of those who live in Greece. They are a symbol of tranquility and the beads are said to help relieve worry. It’s not unusual to find several sets of beads hung up throughout a home.

It’s also not uncommon to see people in Greece carrying the beads with them. They may keep a set in the car. You’ll likely see some hanging from the rear view mirrors in vehicles there, and some people even keep a set in their pocket or purse. A great place to see many sets of worry beads is at the airport in Athens. Anxious flyers often hold tight to their beads during flights. It helps to relax them.

In addition to help ward off stress, many people turn to them for even more support. They are said to have helpful qualities when it comes to stopping smoking and even losing weight. Rubbing the worry beads is suggested whenever a person feels stressed or overwhelmed. When you are trying to break an addiction to nicotine or food, rubbing them can really be an important aid. This is one of the reasons so many people offer the beads as a gift to others.

Finding them outside the Greek Islands isn’t difficult at all. Many countries are now catching on to the worry bead craze. You can find them all over the world. If you are looking for authentic Greek worry beads though, ensure that’s where they were originally made. They will usually be called Komboloi worry beads. This suggests that they were indeed crafted in Greece.

If you know someone who struggles with worry and stress, buy a set for them as well. Although they may be just a tad bit skeptical of the power of Greek worry beads, once they hold them, they’ll understand their charm. They do indeed offer comfort and by rubbing your finger or thumb over them, you’ll feel the stress just melt away. In our stress-filled world, almost everyone can benefit from having a set of these unique beads.
