Not All Fishes The Same

Different fish behave in different ways - they can be loners, roughnecks, adorable buddies or odd birds.  Some fish prefers a solitary existence, some only get along well in pairs, while others thrive in schools.  Those who are highly territorial can be pretty nasty, and their presence can cause other fish in the aquarium to feel uneasy or threatened.

Therefore, it is important that you know the characteristics of a fish before getting it for your aquarium.

Choosing Fish
If you are setting up a community aquarium, the needs of its inhabitants, in terms of water quality, temperature and light, must be more or less similar.

Ideally, you should select a compatible mix of top, middle and bottom dwellers.  By having fish “populate” all sections of the aquarium, you will not only create a livelier aqua scape, but also avoid too many fish swimming “fin by fin” in one particular section of the aquarium.

Always remember this:  Less is often more.  Try to avoid rearing too many different species of fish.  It is better to have a few well-chosen species, especially if you are a beginner fish hobbyist.
